Día de Independencia Colombiano

This past weekend two of our friends came up here and we took all 4 bikes and rode the Tri Rail down to do the Hollywood Beach ride. Turns out, they were also celebrating the Colombian Independence Day early down there. While I had wanted to go one of the festivals that were going on this past weekend in South Florida, due to absurdly high entrance fees we deemed it not worthy. So at least we did get to celebrate. The actual date is July 20th though.

Feliz Día de Independencia, Colombianos!

The air was hot and stale, the sand burned your feet, but the water was totally worth it. Lots of little fish everywhere! That and the Spumoni ice cream that is always our first stop. Then afterwards, pizza and beer is always a good combination!

A New Cycle Chic Family!

This evening I had a very pleasant surprise when I came out of the Publix foodstore to my bike. Lo and behold another dutch-style bicycle was parked at an adjacent pole where a purple mountainbike had been when I arrived 20 minutes prior. Turns out it was a family outing (as well as a beer run as evidenced by the brilliantly strapping a case of Sierra Nevada to the rack). We were all sheepishly glancing at each other and after mutually striking up conversation, turns out he had been in China and imported the bicycle here. The bicycle is an old-fashioned Phoenix, much like the Flying Pigeons, and apparently are getting harder to come by over there since electric bikes are the fashion now. It's a beautiful pristine bicycle with full chainguard, traditional rear stand that lifts the rear wheel up, and beautiful shiny rod brakes. He also had the white cotton tail painting on the rear fender and the double top bar so it's built for heavy utility hauling. His wife told me that because the bike doesn't have a skirtguard like mine does, her skirt once got caught up in it and she had to cut it off with scissors! Lucky it didn't cause an accident. So these features are indeed truly useful, they are not just decoration. She rides a beautiful beach cruiser and the son has his own stylish cruiser bike with white walls and red rims. They rode over from the historic El Cid neighborhood a mile or so south down the road. It's very wonderful that this area is at the very least family friendly for bicycling. The best part I noticed is that they weren't wearing helmets and thus not riding with fear. Way to go guys!

A beautiful chic family on beautiful chic bicycles, Welcome to Cycle Chic!

Fourth of July Bike Date

In celebration of our nation's Independence Day, we had another bike date to the inlet following the Palm Beach Trail up again but on our large dutch bikes this time. The ride this time felt like nothing as compared with last time on the smaller folding bikes. Another couple on the docks had the same idea. They were having a nice sushi dinner sitting on the dock, legs hanging over the edge above the turquoise waters. I love that little park. It has a couple of benches, some bike racks, a couple of nice cold water fountains, and the dock that goes out into the Inlet. All that we really need. If anyone has not done this ride, it's the most pleasant one around here!

We have one cruise ship here in the Port of Palm Beach called the Bahamas Celebration and it replaces the former Palm Beach Princess cruise line that was old and fell on hard times. We just happened upon the time it was setting sail and it's pretty fun waving at the people on the top deck who are hollering and waving back as they leave the Intracoastal and head to sea. While it doesn't compare to the behemoths that line the MacArthur Causeway in Miami, from sea level they're still huge and passing close by like that still illicted some wows.

Lots of bikes when the streets are closed for Fourth on Flagler

Barge set up for the fireworks show

Beautiful scenery

Everyone on a bike date at the park

Lots of boats still out wrapping up their Monday off at Peanut Island
